I fell in love with my first Doberman when I was
no more than 3 or 4 years old. He belonged to a friend of my grandmother. He
was a magnificent black male named Stinger and I thought the world revolved
around this dog. Well by the time I was 6 Gail (the owner) finally let me
walk him around the block, That was it. Every morning I was at grandmas I
would be knocking on Gail's door to take Stinger for his daily walk. Now my
mother knew I was walking a big black dog but had no idea what type he was
as she was at home in Winnipeg while I was visiting Grandma in Saskatoon.
When she finally realized what breed of dog it was she just about had a
heart attack as she had been raised to believe they were mean dogs.
As the years went by all I ever talked about
was owning Dobermans. It did not matter how many shows I went to or
different breeds I had seen I knew it had to be Dobermans for me. My first
show Dobe came in 1994. I did a bit of of showing with him but felt I was
being beat because he was natural eared so I focused more on obedience for a
while. Then of course I got married to cat person of all people but made it
clear I would not give up my Dobes. He was ok with that and has come along
way since now we only own 1 cat and 3 Dobes!!!
A few years went by when I was living in Sundre,
Alberta and Shooter was older so I was not competing in any shows. I had a
rescue Bitch and Shooter and that was it. When I moved back to Winnipeg I
found myself adopted by a beautiful black bitch named Luna and a couple
years later Storm and Tia.
My husband, although he loves the dogs, does not
like competing so his job is to spoil them at home and I get to be the one
who travels with them to all the shows. He is also the one who sleeps on the
couch if the dogs and I go to bed earlier than him as he says you all looked
so comfy I couldn't wake you. Needless to say the dogs like going to bed
earlier than him now!
